When asked why she sings in French, Heather says, "I grew up in Canada where I fell in love with the French language. It's so musical, it's beautiful to simply hear it spoken. Add that to the poignant melodies and lyrics written by greats like Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel, and I am compelled to sing these passionate songs." When she was 3, Heather’s family moved from Oregon to Canada, homesteading on a remote property in northern BC without electricity or running water. Over the next 14 years, her family moved constantly. Heather remembers telling people who asked why her family moved so much, “We don’t go on vacations. We just move there.” She remembers long trips from one town to another when her family would sing the latest popular songs or make up silly songs to pass the time. Heather attended 13 different schools in towns as far north as Vanderhoof and as far south as Victoria, Kelowna, and Nanaimo. Heather grew up without a TV most of the time and music was always at the forefront, everything from Joan Baez to The Rolling Stones. Growing up in a family where music was key fueled her passion for singing. “I constantly sang to myself as a young girl”, she says, “that is, until 7th grade when I entered Sechelt Elementary’s talent contest. I was too shy to ask anyone to accompany me, so standing all alone on the stage I sang Country Roads and won 2nd place. After that, I was hooked.” Determined to ditch the shyness, upon learning that her family was moving to Ocean Falls, one of the most isolated towns in BC, Heather vowed to God that she would no longer be shy and would make friends. What she didn’t know was that Ocean Falls (a place with wooden-planked roads and bears that would sometimes share those roads with people) would make her feel welcome right away, and making friends was suddenly easy. Heather began soloing at school concerts, sang with the high school band, and performed at weddings. It was during her three years in Ocean Falls that she really began to dream of making singing her career. Heather continued the family tradition of moving frequently, and in each place that she lived, she sang with jazz bands, country and pop duos, and in churches as a soloist. Finally settling in the Portland, Oregon area she took time off from her music career to focus on being a mother. At the age of 40, when the music called her back to the limelight, she pursued professional voice coaching from pianist and vocalist Laura Cunard. In 2008, Heather hit the vibrant local jazz scene with her unique, timeless, and bilingual style and is now a well-known and highly esteemed entertainer throughout the region. 2008 was the first year that she began working with pianist Steve Christofferson, who would become her longtime musical partner. Together they have recorded four albums, including her latest CD, I Remember You, a “gorgeously conceived album,” which features Heather’s “mellifluous voice.” The album's “poignant communication between Heather and Steve speaks volumes about their 14-year collaboration.” Heather has performed with some of the Northwest's premier jazz musicians, including Tom Grant, Vince Frates, Dennis Caiazza, and Ron Steen, as well as bay area pianist David K Mathews who is currently touring with Santana and Seattle's Milo Petersen, formerly with Eartha Kitt. Heather earned an honor's degree in French at Portland State University in 1992 and is a certified and devoted Montessori teacher and the proprietress of The Happy Children's Montessori in Hillsboro, Oregon. She shares the joy of music and French with the children in her school every day.
